It is usually around this time of the year when my social media is flooded with people talking about setting goals and starting off a strong new year. But does setting goals really work? Does setting goals really help us grow and achieve the things that we want in life? Today, I want to share with you why I think setting goals doesn’t really work.
Setting Goals Doesn’t Work If Your Goals Are Not Specific
When you set goals for yourself, make sure your goals are specific and measurable. What do I mean by this?
A lot of the time, people set goals without even knowing if the goals are what they really want. S
For example, saying that you want a new car is simply JUST NOT ENOUGH! You need to know what type, what colors, what years of car you want. Most importantly, do you know how much this car is going to cost you? A lot of people put fancy cars on their dream board without knowing anything about the car. I call this “dreaming”, not “setting goals and planning for success”. Besides, if you don’t even know how much the car costs, how do you know the number to work toward?
Have you had a test drive the car before? What if the two hundred thousand dollars car you have been working so hard for turned out to be not quite something you wanted?
Isn’t it better to avoid the wrong investment at the beginning by knowing exactly what you really want and be very specific about your goals?
Setting Goals Doesn’t Work If You Don’t Mean It
I am guilty of this every year. Every December, I would cut a picture of a super fit model with her 6 packs abs and stick it on my dream board. I would sign up and pay for the whole year for the gym and only went for less than 10 times. Until one day, I got frustrated with myself and my failed fitness journey, I realized that I really didn’t want to have 6 packs and all those muscles flexing around my body. I just wanted to be healthy.
So instead of setting goals that I don’t mean, I started to set goals that really speak to me.
Setting Goals Doesn’t Work If Your Hustle Doesn’t Match Your Goals.
Everyone wants to live the comfortable and happy life but not everyone is willing to go through the work that is required to get there. Don’t make your goals bigger than your hustle! Make your hustle bigger than your goals and your dreams will eventually come true.
Are you sick and tired of setting goals every January just to know that you couldn’t cross them out in December? I know I am! I also know that if I keep doing the same things, I will always get the same results.
Let’s start 2018 with a new game plan! Let’s make fewer announcements and take more actions!
